Re: Oldest British picture postcards
Thanks, Linda. I did not know about the Guernsey website, and the postcards reproduced there as well as the accompanying text were most interesting and informative. It must have taken a while before postcard collecting caught on in Britain. Before September 1894 a British postcard was a preprinted 1...

Oldest British picture postcards
Does anyone know where one may view examples of the oldest British picture postcards? The oldest one found appears to be the artist-drawn view of Scarborough published by E.T.W. Dennis and posted in September 1894. I have two or three British PPCs from 1896, but nothing earlier. There must be such i...

Court size postcards
Does anyone know the origin of the term "court size", referring to pre-1902 postcards in a smaller than standard size, usually 3 1/2 " x 4 1/2 "? My guess is that it has nothing to do with courts or royalty. Maybe it comes from the French court, short?

Re: Acceptable condition
I collect views of London c. 1890-1950. With modest funds available for my collecting, I generally stick to items going for $10 (£5) or less, though I have paid as much as $20 (£10) for a card. My sources are online auctions and sales, flea markets, and shows (mainly the Metropolitan Post Card Club,...

Re: Making My Own Postcards
You may be able to have high quality cards professionally printed at fairly low cost, and at 100% low hassle. I'm in New York and got very good, quick, inexpensive results with a local printer (4over4.com). Google UK shows me UK equivalents (though I would recommend your looking at the 4over4 websit...

Re: Most appealing subject of postcard collecting
Brian, What a fine essay on your love of dogs, and on the postcard connection with that love! I very much enjoyed reading it and hope others do too. My postcard spreadsheet shows the following Hildesheimers: Royal Albert Hall Series 5292 Piccadilly Circus 5469 St. Clement Danes 6476 Ludgate Hill 522...

Re: Introduction & Query
Hello Brianz, Though I don't think I can help much with your queries I am curious about your collecting specialties. In particular, what got you started on artist signed dog postcards? (Come to think of it I think I have a few Hildesheimers . . . I'll check my collection. But nothing like a checklis...

Re: Most appealing subject of postcard collecting
Andrew, An exemplary response! I say exemplary because you set a pattern for other board users, including myself, to find a way to participate in a “thread” to which they may initially think they have little to contribute. Your June 17 post gives me an idea of the scope and size of your castle colle...

Re: Sorting Postcards
I collect mainly pre-1950 views of central London and now have something in excess of 2,500 cards. I keep them in individual 2 mil. polyethylene sleeves in archival cardboard boxes with sliding “drawers.” The cards are arranged roughly west to east geographically (Kensington to the Tower), with nece...

Re: Most appealing subject of postcard collecting
Andrew, thanks for your post elaborating on your castle collection. In my London interest I also branch out into non-postcard media. For a time I was buying any old print I could find that showed a London church, including engravings by Shepherd and those published by Robert Wilkinson and The Complet...

Re: Most appealing subject of postcard collecting
My postcard collecting is, I have to admit, a full-fledged obsession. I collect views of London – a broad field, to be sure, since with the possible exception of Rome, London may be the most postcarded city in the world. But also perhaps a somewhat hackneyed field, at least for Britons. I do not see...

Re: Deltiologists -Your most interesting story
We are used to seeing the same old greetings on most postcards, but occasionally there is something unusual and noteworthy in the scrawled message. I have a court-size postcard showing a bluish Westminster Abbey with the following message which I transcribe the way it appears on the card: "Dear...

Re: Mirrored Postcard
Just registered today, and this is my first post to the messageboard. One of my favorite postcards is a view of London Bridge from Southwark with St Magnus Martyr on the left and Fishmongers' Hall on the right. Another labels Southwark Bridge as Blackfriars Bridge. And a perennial offering on online...
