Re: Academic interest in postcards 1

Lots of numbers are bandied about, getting a definitive series of stats is harder. The postcard boom years were those from the very early 1900's through to the end of WW1. Millions of cards were sent each year and the numbers increased in most of those years. Think in terms of a world where a simple...

Re: Charles Dickens - Frith Postcard

Hello Bridget, Your postcard is a monochrome reproduction of an oil painting held by the Victoria and Albert museum. The artist was indeed William Powell Frith (1819 - 1909) and the original painting dated from 1859. The image is notable for being disliked by Dickens. Confusingly there was also a po...

Re: Fergusson Limited

I've checked some (there were so many) London Post Office directories of early 1900's and can't locate a Fergusson Limited that's associated with printing or publishing. A 1913 directory for Sydney lists a Fergusson Limited as a wholesale stationers at 39 Carrington Street Sydney, that may be them b...

Re: Bamforth "comic" series

There was a published list, the book is out of print but copies occasionally come up on eBay/Amazon etc. The title is "The Scherer-Silman Bamforth Postcard Catalog". Published by Bertram Silman in 1981. Text by Major Robert W Scherer. It was a limited edition print and has no ISBN number a...

Re: postcard swastika

Velvetina is correct, prior to the rise of the Nazis the Swastika was a commonly used 'good luck' symbol. From the Victorian era through to the 1920's many good luck greeting postcards used the symbol. If you run a Google search for "Swastika postcard" you'll find lots of greeting postcard...

Re: SKYLARK song card

Hello Julie, Your set of cards were published by Bamforth and are part of a VERY large series of song sets that they issued in the years leading up to and through the First World War. Bamforth originally issued some of their song series as Magic Lantern slides which were used to accompany sing along...

Re: Post Office picture card series 1980s

Correct, with VERY few exceptions they are of limited value. The designs, like the stamps, are nice and there are some collectors but supply is generally higher than demand. In a xx years time they may be of more interest. If I were you I'd enjoy them for what they are. I've used them before now to ...

Re: On The Round December 1908

Long shots 1. Does your photocopy of the postcard have any publisher or photographer identification, usually just initials and/or a number or a logo to one of the corners? It might help locate a source. 2. Does the caption look to be printed or handwritten? The former would suggest a card published ...

Re: Post Office picture card series 1980s

Your cards are known as PHQ postcards, issued from 1973 onwards and depicting the design of a commemorative Royal Mail stamp that was issued at much the same time. The PHQ stands for Postal Headquarters. If you run an internet search for PHQ you will find examples and prevailing prices. There's a Wi...

Re: Set of [French] War Propaganda Postcards - CROISSANT (1914)

Hello Jamie, I've seen this set before, on offer at around six pounds per card though I don't know if they sold. Quite distinctive cards, black & white images. The seller was presenting them with Croissant as the artist name but I did wonder if the name was that of a publisher or perhaps a refer...

It may be a false trail but I have seen suggestions that the Austrian publisher Brüder Kohn (BKWi) had a Berlin presence at 164 Friedrichstraße, Berlin.

Re: Selling old Postcards

Please bear in mind that it's always very difficult to be sure of these things without seeing the cards but the Hendon Group sounds interesting, the others are more routine and of limited value (two to four pounds each). Of the Hendon cards the 'First Aerial Post' will have added value if the Postal...

Re: Picture postcard paper

Not my area of expertise but, as an amateur photographer who moved to digital it's a very very long time since I last developed and printed an image in a darkroom, I'm assuming that's what you are looking for ? Similarly I'm guessing that you are looking for something with the photo emulsion on one ...
