Re: Closure of many Post Offices

The other day I went past a sub-post office about a mile from the one nearest to me that's to close next month. There was a queue of eight people on the pavement outside; doesn't bode well when it has to cater for the "disposssessed".

Re: Closure of many Post Offices

I can see that some (many) post offices are unviable, given that they've lost so many of their services. Since last year I've renewed my car Road Fund on-line, which takes me about 30 seconds, and saves the bother of going to the nearest PO that renews car tax and queuing for at least five minutes. ...

Re: Most appealing subject of postcard collecting

Hi Moonraker, Thank you for taking the time to outline the interesting points in the message of 03 03 08. One might add that your efforts have been put to good use by creating a unique diary of your subject and in time you may have enough material in hand to produce an illustrated publication with ...

Re: Most appealing subject of postcard collecting

Hi Moonraker, Thanks for the response. Would it be fair comment to state that the collector is equally absorbed in the message content as to the postcard subject? Best wishes Brian I collect PCs of military activity in Wiltshire and have a number of cards where the message adds greatly to the value...

Re: Most appealing subject of postcard collecting

1. Building up a reference work of PCs of a particular locality and researching them and their messages. 2. Looking at cards some time after acquisition and spotting new detail, or appreciating something about them because of recently-acquired knowledge. 3. Solving a puzzle about a card or its messa...

Not really much of a a problem in the postcard sector, but allegedly there are forums/chatrooms dispensing advice on how to obtain goods on eBay for nowt by claiming non delivery, not as described, faulty etc Hopefully not too much of a problem with postcards, as the value is relatively low. Dunno ...

One might also ruminate about what value an item should be when paying extra for a "signed for" postal service. An Australian eBay vendor once insisted on sending a £7 PC by an "international signed for" service that cost me £5 (which I knew about and had allowed for when I was...

. ... Even if I had it valued, my insurers advised that they would only pay out for items I replaced... How daft. Many of the postcards I've got aren't likely to come my way again, and some have postmarks and messages that make them probably unique. Then there are insurance companies who expect you...

I used to be a keen stamp collector and had problems getting insurance cover, even though it was kept in a safe. Companies wanted to know if the safe was bolted to the ground, could I give a list of all the items (in 20 albums!), could I get it professionally valued (which would have cost a bomb)? T...

Re: Major changes on Ebay

Lots of changes announced earlier in the week, ...the new requirement for sellers with over a certain turnover or number of sales to register as business sellers... Which will make it easier for HMRC (that's the taxman) to suss out who should be declaring the income from their eBay sales ! Moonraker

II do wonder if the upward trend will continue over the next 30 years - I suspect so, though probably not so dramatically in percentage terms. Certainly those collectors who got in early made a very wise investment, a far better retirement portfolio than the average pension plan (and eBay makes it ...

Given that it was only my second BIPEX, I guess my view is unbalanced then  It takes lots of individual views to achieve a balanced one. I've been collecting for almost 12 years, so it's a bit more difficult for me to find new material. But recently I've seen few duplicates of cards that I do ...

I started a thread on this Forum after I had had a disappointing day at it (followed by a poor day at Woking in Septembe...

Re: BIPEX 2008

Andrew: congratulations, yours was the first post for more than three weeks, and I was beginning to wonder if anyone was still out there! The dates have been in my diary for some time, and I'll probably be there for one day. It rather depends if I go to a big fair outside the South East beforehand. ...

What photographs d'you wish had been published on postcards?

The local postcard publishers of a hundred years ago seem to have been fairly ubiquitous, capturing many newsy occasions (though not always providing captions) and landmarks. Are there any that they appear to have missed out on, and you wish they hadn't? With regard to the army in Wiltshire, men lik...
