Other pet hates are rubber-stamps such as the infamous 'Hogsthorpe Horror' from the 1980's and the parallel lines you get from the glue of those 'self adhesive' albums. Was that the rubber stamp offering to take the card back at 50% of the price paid if you bought a new one? Moonraker I don't recal...

Oh dear; just received the photos in question and they're poor quality modern copies of the original photographs - the sort of thing that cost about 50p each to make. Let's see what a protest to the vendor (who has 100% positive feedback but no stated returns policy) will do. Some PC dealers do off...

Thanks for the report. I will be getting some feedback from the "other side" of the table at the Leeds Fair tomorrow, and Nottingham on Monday. The overall effect of eBay is somewhat uncertain, there are usually only about 40,000 up for auction on the UK site at any one time, though this j...

Here's my translation of the message on the back (punctuation added by me): Dear Denis(?) I thought you would like one of these cards of the proclamation of the new King at Kingston. I am in amongst the crowd. I remember what a sad event this is to us all. I hope you are all well from Auntie. In te...

I think this is because a postcard - just like a stamp or cigarette card - has a value beyond that of the image it shows.

Although this is also true of the work of a select band of photographers, in general it does not apply to anonymous photographs.

 Very entrepreneureal of you. I too am a "serious collector" but of comic cards you understand. I can hear you saying "How can a comic postcard collector be a serious collector?" I think because a comic postcard collector takes his subject seriously!!!!!!!!! Well, at least ...

Agreed that these late delivery stories are not what they seem, over the years I have had a one or two packets of cards coming to me which have come open in the post, and some of the contents have "escaped". It's feasible that these went on to be delivered as addressed, so it may not even ...

Re: Cash In The Attic 7 August 2007

[quote I didn't see this, but "experts" in these cases are usually generalists. But then I see some curious pricing of my collecting interest by postcard dealers. Dunno who the potential bidders were for the saucy/comic postcards, but I guess they were generalists too and didn't include t...

Re: Cash In The Attic 7 August 2007

 Just finished watching this. One lot was for a collection of saucy/comic postcards. The "Expert" put an estimate of £40.00 on this. The collection looked in superb condition too. The winning bid was £5.00!!!!! Oh boy, was I mad that I could not have been there!! "John Boy"...

Re: Picturegoer Postcards.

:( I know it will be a shot in the dark but here goes because you never know your luck in a raffle!! Could anyone tell me when these cards first appeared please? "John Boy" The cards were produced from 1921 and continued until the magazine ceased publication in April 1960. For more info s...

The web history does seem to refer only to carte de visites and cabinets, but the market for these declined dramatically with the advent of the postcard era, so it is likely that they did produce some postcard backed material from the Edwardian era onwards.

In fact I doubt it does much to boost sales, especially for those sellers who describe every card as "rare". Possibly the term can only meaningfully be used in relation to cards of the same genre - for example a card by Quinton could be rare compared to another one by the same artist. Or i...

Rare postcards on eBay

Always a fun search to do - at this moment in time there are 484 postcard lots on eBay UK with this word in the title. Expand the search to include descriptions as well as titles and the number shoots up to 2,114. Even taking out the alternative uses of the word (e.g. postal losses are extremely rar...

Re: How old is an 'OLD' postcard?

I've recently bought an 'OLD' un-posted black & white postcard on eBay and was disappointed to find that it must be post 1961 and not what I understand to be 'OLD'. I am wondering how old should a card be before it should be advertised as old. What do other people think? Is it just me that is t...

An interesting story - what are your postcards of? They were in Thornton Heath by the time of the "postcard era" so presumably they are of local buildings of that area? Also, did they publish them themselves, or was a third party involved?
