There are exceptions (take the Peter Pan case as one) where perpetuity of copyright is kept, but as a "general rule" (but not rock solid), 70 years after the authors death or 70 years after first published if date of death is not known. Also, if the originator, or his/her benefactors are provided the material for commercial gain, the time period still remains with the originator.
Its a very muddy area!
