Academic interest in postcards - nostalgia

I'm also wondering why some cards have a nostalgic theme to them - I find that such cards originated in the 1970s but would you disagree? Do you find all postcards to be inherently nostalgic? Do you find that the earliest cards convey a very different feeling to modern cards and, if so, how would you describe it? (I'm obviously thinking of topo cards here)

I'd be fascinated to hear anything that you can tell me about postcards and about why you collect. Many thanks
