Help please !

Post by peterbash »

[/color]As a new member, I would like some help. I have inherited quite a large amount of old Post Cards, mainly covering the UK [With specific areas collected seperatly] plus a lot from other countries. Some still the penny and halfpenny stamps on them, mainly dating from the early 19 hundreds and I was wondering which, if any are worth saving ?

Hi Peter,
First welcome on joining. You are obviously not a postcard collector, or you would not be asking which are worth saving. The answer from a collectors point of view is:All are worth saving:Views generally sell on e-bay around 40p to £1,however if they have interesting cars, buses, trams in them this can rise to several pounds. From a postage /stamp point of view, interesting cancellations are worth money. If you have cards from war periods i.e. South Africa (Boar War)1898-1900 or WW1 1914-1918 silk cards these can be quite valuable. i.e regimental silks can bring £20/£50 depending on regiment /condition.
I myself collect military/uniform postcards,regimental history etc.
If you want my opinion on any of your cards my e-mail addres is geoff@peakehu175nr.fsnet.co.uk.

best Wishes.

Thanks for your reply Geoff, you are quite right, I am not a collector but was interested to see if the cards did have any potential value. On closer inspection they have been catagorised into various types, i.e. From Scotland, Wales and England plus some from the Scilly Isles and quite a number from Abroad and date mainly from the thirties and forties. I did select two which I thought might be of some value. Both show Ships. One is the RMS Franconia 'Cunard White Star' leaving Liverpool and the other is the RMS Lusitania at sea. Both appear to be more like paintings than actual photographs. I have never counted the entire collection, but there must be hundreds [They fill a medium sized 'holdall']

Best,

Hello again Peter,
I would be inclined to post these onto e-bay. If you are happy to take the time to scan and list the cards, this would probably give you the best return.Your maritime cards sound as though they are artist drawn,I know very little of these, but a good seller of this type of card on e-bay is three4five whose site is military & maritime. It would be worth looking at his site to get an idea of prices (I feel around £4.99 each from what you describe)

Good luck with you selling.
Any military I would be interested in.

Regards.

Hi Geoff,
Thanks again for your help, I will certainly take your advice and see what I can do on E-Bay, unfortunatly I don't seem to have any military type cards, but If I find some, I will get back to you.

Cheers,

Peter

Hi Peter,

Two very pertinent questions in your reply to moonrakers response to your posting. I hope he can give you the anwers you are looking for.
I very much agree with his observations concerning the types of cards in your collection, some will no doubt be what he describes as dross.and not being a collector, you will find it difficult to determine which these are dross, and which cards are valuable. The only way to gain this knowlege,if you are unable to find a club,or dealers willing to advise on your collection, is to use e-bay as a learning tool, studying prices for which catagories of cards sell, and by looking at their content. Of course all of this depends on the amount of time you wish/or are able to dedicate to the task.
If you can find a local club, this would be ideal, as most collectors are willing to share whatever knowledge they may have.
An annual postcard edition 2009, containing Postcard Dealers,Guides to Fairs , Organisers, and auction houses is available
http://www.postcardcollecting.co.uk (Brian & Mary Lund) cost £4.75 plus postage. May be of help.
Moonraker is correct in warning you that selling cards one at a time is time consuming, and can be expensive if sales are not made. Should you decide to sell the whole lot intact,a specialist auctioneer is undoubtably the correct answer.

I'm sure there must be many collectors in West Yorkshire, and for a list of some fairs see

http://www.postcard.co.uk/fairs.php

These fairs vary in size, and some have more stamp dealers than postcard dealers. You'll see there's a very big one at York Racecourse in April, but this may be a bit overpowering for a newcomer seeking only to sell.

You could also play around with Google to see if there's a club local to you.

(I live near London so have no local knowledge for you.)
