Lake Windermere Steamers

Post by LakeSteamer »

Oh dear , where do I start? I`m looking for an original postcard of this
http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/uu13 ... mrock2.jpg

The pic is of my great Grandfather on his boat "Shamrock" I recently visited Windermere and came across the picture on the wall in a fish and chip shop. My dad was with me and he asked the shop owner if he would be interested in selling the pic. He said it`s not for sale so I took a couple of pics with my camera. The owner did say the picture is of an old postcard he has and which he photocopied but he has it stored in the attic and does not know where to start looking for it. As my dad has no other pictures of his grandfather and his boat, I`m trying to locate an original postcard but don`t know where to start. I need your help. I`ve spent a couple of hours today on the web but not got very far.
Does anyone know of a good web site with a good selection of vintage postcards of Windermere lake steamers and with a search facility??

Your help would be much appreciated.

Hello,

It's a splendid image.

The postcards will certainly be out there so do keep looking at all the usual places, but why not try to locate the boat itself ?

I tried a quick search and ended up at the Steam Boat Association of Great Britain Web Site and they have a record of what may be your vessel at the link below.

OMG. How did you do that? A quick search? I must be doing something very, very wrong when using Google search.

That link is fantastic. Absolutely brilliant. You`re a star. I can`t thank you enough for that. My dad will be chuffed as well. Charlie Ashley was my great grandfather.

Yes I AM still looking for THAT postcard though. My dad only has one original photo of the boat but nothing with his grandad actually on it.

Thanks again.
:D :D :D :D

It's a pleasure !

I suspect that if you find a way of making contact with the current owner of Shamrock (R. Mallinson) your quest for more information and images could be resolved.

Good luck and best wishes

Thanks again for your help and advice. I`ll continue searching. I would love to bring the Shamrock back to the Ashley family but know I will never have the money for that and the owner is highly unlikely to sell her after all the work he`s done. I`ll have to make do with attempting to build a remote control model of her.

Never say never....

I'd try contacting the owner. If nothing else you might get some access to the history and perhaps even to some images. The boat is now very clearly owned by someone who respects its history. Most enthusiasts will gladly share information with others.

Good luck and be happy

I`ve moved the picture within my photobucket account so had to update the link above.

I`m still looking for the original picture and would like some suggestions of where to find on line sites that specialise in vintage postcards. If anyone knows of any other vintage pictures of British steam boats, I would be very interested to hear from you.

Thanks in advance
Luke

Hello Luke,

I suspect that the Steamboat association site mentioned in the previous message http://www.steamboat.org.uk/register/index.htm is your best bet for the vessel(s) you are interested in.

There are many other sites of broader interest.

For Paddle Steamers try http://freespace.virgin.net/tom.lee/contents.htm

Foe shipping lines and their ships try http://www.theshipslist.com/index.html and http://www.simplonpc.co.uk/SP1.html

There are many others.....

Kind regards
