Wiltshire publishers: Bott, Fred Wright, Fred West

Post by Moonraker »

I have details of some Wiltshire postcard publishers of the 1910s, including T L Fuller, Alfred Vowles and Albert Marrett of Shrewton, but there are several other, less prolific, ones about whom I'm a little curious:

Little is known about Albert Marrett’s local rival, Fred West.

A R Bott of Orcheston published a few cards, including those of the First Canadian Contingent in 1914 and of soldiers at Codford, where he had a studio. Also early in the war, Geo H Bott of Durrington, near Bulford, produced cards showing camp builders.

Fred Wright originally lived in Shipton Bellinger before moving to Andover.

Any details would be welcomed.

I shared your enquiry on Facebook and got an answer from Pete Rollo:
"There may be a number of local directories that could help find them. Such as Kelly's, drakes, white's etc. I use them a lot in my research. Google has most of them scanned. Some are freely downloadable, others you can read and search them, online. You will need to have some idea of where they lived, such as town, village etc. Good luck. Let me know if you need further help"

Hope it helps

Thanks for that. I already know where they lived, though not precisely when. (I try to consult Kelly's Directory on-line but find the Search function a bit cumbersome.)

I was hoping more for background and anecdotes. I have some about T L Fuller, one-time assistant to, and later rival of, Marcus Bennett of Bulford (I have a PC of Bennett's studio at Bulford Camp), Albert Marrett of Shrewton and Alfred Vowles of Porlock and then Sutton Veny. No doubt these names are familiar to most dealers - I was just wondering about some of the less prolific publishers.
