Frederick Fisk

The Lists below are considered definitive, being obtained by comparison of various catalogues issued by Fisk, some of which he printed at the end of his three books of local history, and some of which were issued to callers in his shop. This was supplemented by visits to various archives such as the Tottenham Archive at Bruce Castle Park, The Enfield Local History Unit, etc. where a large number of his postcards are stored. It appears that after his death his remaining stock was donated to the Tottenham Archives.

Three interesting points from this research in the archives came to light:-

Firstly, he was probably the first publisher to date the majority of his postcards. Indeed he issued no new postcards after around 1911 (i.e. Modern views), what postcards he added to his list were all dated prior to 1911 and he carried on selling these until his death in the 1930's.

Secondly, he was possibly the originator of the "Past & Present" postcard, showing two views on a postcard, one old, often from a print, and one that was then "new". He commenced issuing these around 1899 and I believe this is far earlier than any other publisher.

Thirdly, I was struck by his use of the same number several times. Unlike other publishers this was not to replace older negatives because all the duplications, triplications etc., were still evident in the last catalogue he issued, circa 1930. Some can be put down to eccentricity or forgetfulness, but others show a business sense beyond the normal small publisher. For example, No 34. Tottenham Woods and No 34 Woods are the identical photos, as is No 161 Tollgates and No 161 Turnpikes. So he could provide a customer with one picture whichever of the two the customer required. This is particularly so with No 122 where all three photos of the "ancient springs" could serve three different requirements. His output was mainly Tottenham, Middlesex (Now North London) and the titles below are his original titles. I have put an asterisk (*) after the title for those cards where the title does not contain the word "Tottenham" but are of this area. Words in italics are my own added to clarify something (i.e. He appeared confused by Waltham Cross (Herts) and Waltham Abbey (Essex) and named both as Waltham.

Further information on Frederick Fisk is contained in my article in PPM November 1994.
