Christian Colportage Association

Nothing to do with porters, even Cole Porter, colportage is the distribution of leaflets, usually religous based. They must have bought and overprinted my (tatty) Misch postcard (remainders?) of Harland & Wolfes Shipbuilding Yard, Belfast (ships being precariously built on flimsy wooden scaffold) wi...

I can ask John at our stamp club meeting (Tues) and Dougie Luxford who runs the postcard fairs at the next one (6th June) if i can get there, trouble is I've mislaid the card at present! D...

Re: Westminster College -Horseferry Road - London

Not quite! I collect London and couldn't resist a card captioned "Birdseye view of London showing Crystal palace in the distance (very distant!) I think now it was taken from the top of Westminster cathedral, shows the school playing fields and a gasometer in Horseferry Rd (I think) I can pick out R...

Re: WW1 Y.M.C.A. Hut Fund Postcards

I take it these are not the "Eagle huts" put up by the american YMCA in Aldwych during WWI, where Bush House was later built, I have these on an Airco card, not for sale but will copy, Dave

Re: Motorcycles

I'm always on the lookout for PC's of passes, hillclimbs, remote areas, with a vehicle in, I have a theory that such vehicles would be a rarity and probably belong to the photographer himself, I think I've found a Valentine mobile darkroom in a motorcycle sidecar, but very small scale, not very much...

Re: Cornish Litany postcards

I did pick up one at out last fair at Redruth (cos it was cheap!) hoping to find out something about the artist, Sidney T Chaplin, but can't. To explain altho I live in Cornwall I collect London PC's (they're cheaper!) but need the occasional cornish card to keep the interest of the few members of o...

Re: window cleaning

I keep an eye out for ladders on my old London postcards, some are impossibly long one piece wooden ones, I was hoping to find a website that had an old catalogue of wooden ladders to see what was available. I have one, I think, in Oxford St 5 floors high! Dave

Re: Dating Postcard Photographs

I collect London postcards, dating is made easier by knowledge of transport changes, London's are well chronicled. Recently I read that white lines were introduced in 1924 but can find no evidence on my London cards till much later. Also roundabouts in 1926 but traffic was not heavy enough to notice...

Re: Dating postcards

I have lists (which I bought on e bay) of Friths, Valentines and Judges but I think you can date Friths on their website (which is good anyway) and valentines on the University of Dundee website. Actually the lists don't extend before postcards were "invented" which is a bit silly. I collect London ...
