Reading postcard fair - road closure

Reading Postcard Fair is being held on July 1. Note that a nearby road will be closed for resurfacing: article Just to clarify that it appears the closure will affect drivers trying to access the centre from the west, under the Cow Lane railway bridges that have been notorious bottlenecks for decades.

Re: To eBay or not to eBay?

Just a couple of other observations, based on very recent experiences: A postmark on a card doesn't necessarily relate to the scene shown. A current listing shows a group of soldiers in open country, almost certainly at summer camp, but because there's a Trowbridge postmark the vendor has assumed th...

Re: Postcard dealers at STAMPEX

Thanks for that. Though it's some years since I've attended a PC fair, there are several names that I recognise. I gather than an article in the next Picture Postcard Monthly will indicate why I'm going along to STAMPEX (another clue being the name I use on this forum)!

Postcard dealers at STAMPEX

Are there likely to be (m)any postcard dealers at this year's STAMPEX in North London in February?

(I'm planning to go there to view some postcard lots soon to be offered by an auction house.)

Re: To eBay or not to eBay?

I admit that nowadays I'm on the fringe of the collecting scene, but in the past six months I've become increasingly jaded by what's being offered on eBay in my area of interest: military Wiltshire. When exploring the site, I use several search terms, some of which produce multiple offerings (in som...

Re: "Halfpenny Packet Post" not acceptable for PC

Thanks for your reply, David, which does answer my question. Printed on the left side of the card at the top is "No writing other than address and signature to be on this card" and at the bottom is "From ", with a temptingly large blank space in between.

"Halfpenny Packet Post" not acceptable for PC

I've just bought a panoramic card published by Photochrom Co Ltd showing Bulford Camp and posted in 1909. The size (240 x 100mm) does more justice to the photograph than on normal-sized PCs on which it features quite often. On the address part of the card is printed "Halfpenny Packet Post"...

Re: eBid...

Really? I searched eBid "All categories" for "Salisbury Plain": 15 hits, including four copies of the same aviation print. On eBay, search limited to "Collectables":166 hits. yes, really... how many of those did you buy, I wonder? ...and there may be less on eBid becau...

Re: To eBay or not to eBay?

Those over-priced cards I mentioned above in my post of March 13 last year are still unsolld (no surprise there), and I've taken a perverse pleasure in listing on eBay with a starting price of £3.99 a duplicate of one of those for which £121.39 is being asked. And it won't surprise me if mine doesn'...

Re: Postcard Question

Your archivist may be technically correct, but thousands of postcards have been reproduced in books and on websites where it has been impossible or very difficult to determine who owns copyright, especially a century or more after the image first appeared. It would not be worthwhile anyone suing som...

Re: Postcard Question

Postcard copyright questions such as yours crop up from time to time on a military website to which I belong, with pragmatism often being suggested. The chances of determining the copyright holder and being able to contact them are remote - as, indeed, are the chances of the holder coming across any...

Re: To eBay or not to eBay?

Happy ending! The same vendor listed another PC of the same Breguet aircraft at Lark Hill; it wasn't as good as the £119 card, but I was the only bidder and won it for £50 - more than I would have paid for it from an unsuspecting dealer at a fair, but I'm content. Sometimes I sniff at eBay vendors w...

Re: To eBay or not to eBay?

Phew! Just ended on eBay: fierce bidding for a postcard that went for £119 - which meant that someone else was willing to go up to £117. (I dropped out well before then.) It showed a Breguet aircraft that was entered in the Military Aeroplane Competition held near Stonehenge in 1912 to determine a s...

Re: To eBay or not to eBay?

As a buyer, I find DelCampe useless. I've just tried three searches that produced mostly dross that's been hanging around on eBay for months: "Salisbury Plain": 22 PCs on offer, including 6 of Stonehenge. All the others but two had very familiar scenes. (eBay often offers around 60 or 70 c...
