Re: Most appealing subject of postcard collecting

Given that I collect postcards of castles, I get satisfaction when finding "new" castles - that is, postcards of castles for which I do not have any other picture of. Obviously, as time progresses, this becomes more difficult, and increasingly expensive. I enjoy scanning the cards to see t...

I agree that some cards have what I consider silly prices. This may upset some of the dealers, but I nearly always wander round the fair first, just having a look at the general prices for postcards at each stall. I try to look at similar cards at each one, then return to the ones that I consider th...

Canterbury Postcard (and Collectors) Fair

When I walked into the Westgate Hall on Saturday, my first thought was that there were more dealers than usual. More dealers - yes, but not so many postcard dealers. Dealers of stamps, books, medals and other memorabilia seem to be on the increase. I guess it is a case of demand - and if people who ...

My current household insurer last year refused to insure my collection of postcards and engravings - unless, like Moonraker, I had it professionally valued. It's too large to carry to a valuer, even if I could find such a person, so they would have to come to my home. Even if I had it valued, my ins...

I noted that they advertised in last years' BIPEX catalogue. Would it be an idea, since they are specialist insurers, to have a permanent link to their website somewhere on this website - subject to their agreement of course (although, I can't see them not agreeing, since it gives them more free adv...

Given that it was only my second BIPEX, I guess my view is unbalanced then

E-bay has helped me too, but with the postage costs, I find I prefer the fairs. BIPEX 2007 saw me add about 200 cards to my collection, at a far cheaper price than if I bought stuff on e-bay. Also, there is far more choice at the fairs. My first BIPEX in 2006 literally blew my mind - but I was more ...

BIPEX 2008

So I'm the first to post here in 2008.

Having noted the dates for BIPEX 2008, I've booked the time off work. I know that there were a number of negative responses for the 2007 event, but I enjoyed it, and will be there again this year.

Anyone else thinking that far ahead?

[quote="Moonraker"]... most collectors are interested only in the image, not how it was produced?

My thoughts exactly.

What do you call someone who collects postcards ?

Apart from possibly mad (or sad, according to my nephew).

I have finally been educated - I am a deltiologist.

OK. So you already knew. But I didn't.

Thanks for your kind offer, but no thank you. I assume you mean Grosmont Castle - of which I already have a number of postcards. I hope you find a home for them.

I see the number of members has been cut from over 200 to 72. Presumably the ones cut out are those who have not posted at any stage. Things have been quiet here too. Is there REALLY nothing happening in the postcard world? Has this place become a graveyard, or are there lots of people on holiday? D...

I would like to add another point in favour of the fairs. As I walked into the Westgate Hall in Canterbury on Saturday morning, the smell of bacon being cooked wafted across the hall. Having a hot bacon roll partway through the proceedings, and the smell of bacon and sausages being grilled makes the...
