Comparitive values of postcards and photos
My postcard collection includes a few original photographs, such as those issued by press bureaux to newspapers in 1915. IIRC I paid about £15 each for these. I've seen some of the same images reproduced on postcards that sell for £8-15. (I've also seen later press photos listed at £100+ each.) Curr...

Re: Postcard Image Theft.
Yes, it is annoying, especially when more than half the eBay listings for a locality are copies. Very occasionally I do see a repro of a rare card of which I was unaware - this is informative, but irritating in that I'm unlikely ever to spot an original. There's one vendor in Australia who lists &qu...

Re: Postcard fairs - COVID
I can see a "Post Reply" button on this thread but not on Alan's announcing his fair. I won't be going as it would require a 70-minute train journey in each direction. I see that there's also a fair being held on Wednesday in Edgbaston . The AMP Fairs website says "We aim to provide a...

Postcard fairs - COVID
I've been trying to add to Alan Winter's new thread about the West London Postcard Fair on July 17, but there's no "Post Reply" button on it. I was a bit surprised to see that this was being held, especially as the "Terminus" of COVID restrictions isn't due until the 19th. Will t...

Another delayed postcard
Only a couple of days ago was I thinking that we were due for another of those newspaper stories about a postcard being delivered decades late. I've just read this: Postcard sent from WW2 veteran arrives in UK 77 years late 'A Royal Mail spokesperson said it is “difficult to speculate on what may ha...

Re: Brexit - Customs, VAT on packages
A card I posted to Sweden arrived without problem.. I've just searched for "German postcards" on eBay, specifying items that would be posted from Germany. Just a few very low-value cards (£2-3) have notes saying that 20% VAT will be added, but those with much higher starting prices do not....

Cost of a postcard c1915
How much did a postcard cost a century or so ago - 2d? 6d? Was there a premium for cards that were exclusive - group shots of a few soldiers, for example, compared with those that were printed in their hundreds and thousands?

Re: Brexit - Customs, VAT on packages
Royal Mail guidance Yesterday I posted two low-value postcards to Sweden and the Czech Republic (£2 and £4.50) and sent messages to both purchasers advising of postal problems within the UK, mentioning the problem my friend had in posting a letter to me from Poland and asking for their indulgence s...

Re: Brexit - Customs, VAT on packages
Others are expressing confusion on the eBay Community pages. This seems to be aimed at Business vendors and is off-putting enough for them. Surely all that Red Tape won't apply to private sellers? Luckily I've already sold nearly all my high-value stuff and recent sales have been of £3-5 an item to ...

Re: Can it be true ? surely not ?
Quite a character! When I first met him c1997 he already seemed to be of a certain age.
It must be quiet demanding setting up stands and bringing in one's stock, then repeating the process in reverse six hours later, in between standing up and dealing with so many customers.

Brexit - Customs, VAT on packages
I've just glanced at the regulations that will come into force on January regarding packages mailed from the UK (and into it) and VAT, Customs fees etc. Presumably these exclude letters and large letters, the categories most dealers and private sellers use - unless the contents exceed a certain valu...

Re: eBay news
Just seen this on a vendor's listing: "PLEASE NOTE - DUE TO NEW DRACONIAN FEES BEING APPLIED BY BOTH eBAY (10%) & Paypal (Minimum 39p) WE HAVE UNFORTUNATELY HAD TO RAISE OUR PRICES, EITHER BY NOT OFFERING FREE POSTAGE, OR RAISING OUR OFFER PRICE - SORRY BUT WHEN YOU ADD OUR STATIONERY COSTS...

Re: Coronavirus and fairs
These antique and collectors' fairs are still going ahead. Probably a bit different to postcard events, where collectors are prone to spending ten minutes or more standing at a table leafing through boxes.

eBay versus "price gouging"
This post is peripheral to postcard collecting but may serve to revive the forum. eBay is using bots to detect "price gouging", which is when vendors seek to capitalise on the pandemic by offering gels, masks etc at inflated prices. I spent yesterday listing stamps, covers and cards relati...

Re: Coronavirus and fairs
Ouch! :) With my "narrow" interests I still have 2,500 cards, with storage, security and legacy considerations. But you're correct about "clogging" on eBay, notably from multiple listings of certain cards, not least the Daily Mail card "The Wiltshires cheering during the Gre...
