Original postcard artwork by McGill Parr JIB

Post by keren40 »

I am hoping to find some information as I am researching a bag of original postcard artwork I own.

I have had it in the loft since it was given to me about 12 years ago because it was going to be dumped and the person knew I had an interest in art deco and a small interest in stamp collecting.

It is all original artwork for postcards - the saucy seaside style, all on board. Most are roughly A4 with a small number smaller. Most have the caption pencilled at the bottom or in some cases a couple of choices pencilled on the back. There are a small number which are half completed and most have a small amount of foxing around the edges.

There is

1 by Donald Mc Gill
68 by Tom Parr (some are initialled TP rather than the full name but I guess it is the same person)
14 by JIB
1 unsigned and complete
4 unsigned and at various stages of completion

There is also a black and white watercolour of a 1940s style girl by Tom Parr and a piece that I don't think was for a postcard initialled TP 1916 of a small black girl in kind of cartoon style. Some of the Par ones have a second piece in pencil on the reverse of the board.

I have googled Mcgill and kind of gone 'oo-er'!!! but can find nothing on JIB and only 2 used postcards by Tom Parr, one in a batch on ebay and one in a small postcard sale but nothing about either artist so I guess they were minor ones?

Can anyone help with who Tom Parr was? And JIB?

I am going to research the McGill artwork further. It has pencilled captions onthe back of 'An gie me a small Guinnes to tak' home in me , ' and ' what are you having company tonight Mac' and the piece shows a bar scene with a man in a suit and bowler hat, a man in a kilt and a woman behind the bar, looks mid 1920s from her hairstyle.

Any pointers very much appreciated!

I've also emailed the McGill museum on the IoW to ask about the McGill and if they know anything about the other two artists.
