Postcard Producers

Post by nickbits »

Dear All,

I am producing a book on Thatcham and am trying to locate details of some of the manufacturers of postcards. I have tried my hardest but can't find much out about them, or anything in some cases. Two Salmon and Judges are easy enough, just a shame they do not respond to email. Will try phoning them if I can.

Anyway, the ones I am having issues with:
  • Whites
  • Rightons
  • Harner of Reading
  • Tuck's ( Raphael Tuck & sons Ltd )
The last, Tuck's I assume is no longer running, or at least from what I can find out that appears to be the case. I assume the same for Rightons and Harners, but Whites, I just can't find anything. I just want to double double check about these before using any of their postcards. And before anyone points out, I ahve read the other copyright threads, I am reading http://www.ipo.gov.uk/types/copy.htm and I will put a disclaimer in the publication.

I would apreciate any advice and help.

Regards,
Nick

Hello Nick - same answer to a similar thread - check out the Local History library for what seems to be local publishers. If you have dates for these, it helps. A lot of it will be best endeavours and if you add the disclaimer, you are on the right track, I believe.

Raphael Tuck were foremost innovators of the Postcard and were a major influence in the establishment of Postcards as a medium in this country. The have a fine track record of producing some of the best Postcards ever seen. The family firm was taken over in 1962 and then again in 1972 - this time by Fine Art Developments Ltd. I am not sure, however,if the company is still trading or not.

Good luck with the venture - by the way, I was in Thatcham on Wednesday - a lovely place!

Thanks for the help.

Tuck is one of the few where there is some information. I can find most of what you mention, I just don't see if they are still going today or if they closed down. Would have thought it would be easy to find if they were still going so have assumed they are not.

Out of interest for others, I did come upon a useful site with regards to Tuck Postcards http://tuckdb.org/postcards

Thanks again,
Nick

Forgot to say, nice to know someone has heard of us! Do you have much to do with Thatcham?

Not a lot - I was collecting a Rover P5b from an Austin Westminster restorer! - Thatcham is well known for 'Westie' restorations!

So far no luck with a lot of this. I had been given a few leads for Tuck, but they either turn into dead ends or I am still waiting for replies for various companies/people (i.e. Hallmark - http://www.companycheck.co.uk/company/00930345). Some like Frith and Collier are easy, but these ones, nothing.

Anyway, just as a side note and thought, is there not a database of postcard manufacturers, past and present anywhere? If not, I can see this being something that a lot of people may find of use. Is it? If so, I may look into putting part of my site over to a searchable database.

Postard producer companies have a particular SIC code and you can search online business databases by a SIC code. Try this one for example: http://www.bizdb.co.uk/companies-search/.

This is a modern commercial list of companies: a search for Raphael Tuck, for example, shows a non-postcard organisation unrelated to the original company...

Reference should be made to Anthony Byatt's book 'Picture Postcard Publishers' - now out of print for many years - for a proper listing of major publishers
