Large collection of horsecards...sell as one and where?

Post by maria-n »

Hello,

Over thirty years ago I started collecting horsecards, in Holland. I think they are around 1500 different cards, mainly from Holland, Germany, Switzerland and about 100 or 200 originating from the UK. There are many high quality and very beautiful cards among them, which will please any horse-lover or card-collector. There are also two- to threehundred 'doubles'.

Though I love my collection very, very much, but truth is, the cards are just sitting in drawers since twenty years. So I'm thinking to sell the collection, preferably as a whole or in two to four parts. The money would also be very welcome, after having moved recently.

On ebay I'm watching separate cards being sold for 0.99, but that would be too much hassle and I would be sad to see the collection being that much split up.

Does someone have advice for me how to go about it and what sort of price I may hope for? Could it even be expected that there will be anyone interested in such a large collection? Or was this just a 'girls dream', but with little or no monetary value?

Thanking you in advance for any help! :-)

I'm sorry if my questions are 'foolish' or very basic, but I've only ever collected as an individual (because of being very young at that time) and never have been in contact with other collectors.

Hello - wow! - that is a large collection - I'm sure it has given you a lot of pleasure putting it together and it looks as good as it sounds. Naturally, there are many collectors of Horses out there - they may be interested in boosting their collection, but it may be difficult to sell it on to one person and at what price?

Selling via online auction sites is OK, but as you already pointed out, time consuming as well as heart-breaking.

One option would be to take it to a specialised Auction House to consider selling it on your behalf - link to auction houses who are PTA members here:
http://www.postcard.co.uk/auctions.php - that way you have no hassle and would get a fair price I'm sure after fees and commission.

Another option is to approach a Postcard Dealer, or two/three, near to where you live and see whether they would be interested to buy the collection as a whole - they would certainly advise you in the same way.

Or you may get an immediate offer if you take them to a Postcard Fair near you and show them to some of the dealers there - most of these would be happy to advise/make offers I'm sure. Check out the fair listings elsewhere on the PTA site for dates/venues.

Hope it helps - PM me if you need more help
~ send it on a Postcard please ~
