New collector!

Post by jodumpleton »

Hi there everyone!
I've recently become interested in rppc's after drawing one (I work as an artist).
I'm now planning on starting my own small collection. I'm particularly interested in performers before the 1930's. So far I've bought a few pierrot postcards on etsy. Does anyone know of any online shops/collectors that may be able to help me start growing my collection?
Furthermore, does anyone know anything about the copyright on rppc's? I'm just wondering as I may be interested in drawing from some in the future.
Hope to hear from you all soon. Kind regards, Jo

Hi and welcome. Other online sites would include delcampe, eBay and eBid. Also Picture Postcard Monthly is well worth subscribing to, and includes a diary of postcard fairs (mostly in the UK)

Copyright has been discussed a few times on here, the conclusion generally being that it is not a problem with older cards

Hello Jo - welcome to the wonderful world of Picture Postcards!

Concur with Kevin above re: plenty of online auction sites to choose from, and The Picture Postcard Monthly is a valuable resource for the hobby: https://www.picturepostcardmagazine.co.uk/

But you can't beat the thrill and buzz of a postcard fair; looking at thousands upon thousands of old picture postcards - a real head turner if you haven't been before! At a postcard fair you can browse/chat/study any postcard subject/category and get a really good idea of prices to suit your pocket first hand... check out one near you and just have a browse to start with. There is a list of some major fairs here: http://postcard.co.uk/fairs.php

Copyright has been mentioned many times as Kevin states; always a controversial issue with no clear cut guidelines to follow. But it seems as if you are using old postcards as a resource to create art works of your own, therefore there would not be a direct copyright issue in my opinion. Perhaps you might acknowledge the original artist/publisher in some way to cover that.

Best luck - perhaps you might share some of your Postcard work on here one day?

Thank you both for your help, it's very much appreciated. I look forward to attending a postcard fair, sounds great! Although I'm surprised there isn't one listed in London.
And yes, I will definitely post some work when I get some done.
Thanks again.

Apologies, the fair listings referred to above are for those organised by PTA members that can advertise on here. The regular big London fair details can be found here: http://www.bloomsburyephemerafair.com/ - if you are in London, this one is a must-go-to!

There are many others which are advertised in the Picture Postcard Monthly.
