What photographs d'you wish had been published on postcards?

Post by Moonraker »

The local postcard publishers of a hundred years ago seem to have been fairly ubiquitous, capturing many newsy occasions (though not always providing captions) and landmarks. Are there any that they appear to have missed out on, and you wish they hadn't?

With regard to the army in Wiltshire, men like Fuller, Bennett and Marett spent a lot of time photographing the first aircraft (and the inevitable crashes and subsequent funerals), but don't seem to have bothered much with land vehicles. Even the usually-popular traction engines in close-up don't seem to have interested them much, though the army had a good number of these. Fuller did produce cards of the "Little Caterpillar" tractor, but I can't recall seeing a decent card showing army trucks. And there are lots of cards showing empty railway track serving Salisbury Plain camps, but hardly ever is there any rolling-stock on it(save in the cases of troops detraining).

And what a pity postcard publishers from Devizes, Chippenham and Calne don't seem to have bothered with the Marconi wireless station with its massive masts that was nearing completion when war was declared in 1914.
