Postcard Negatives and WW1

Post by Hurley »

I have noticed that many of the cards in my collection were printed (in early colour style) overseas - especially in Germany -just prior to WW1. With the outbreak of war the German reference was usually (but not always) overprinted.

I was wondering what actually happened to the negatives that were sent overseas to postcard printing companies in Germany. Were the negatives usually returned after an order was completed to overseas buyers or were they retained and if so what became of them ?

Do any of the publishers who were active prior to WW1 remain in business ?

Any ideas ?
