Not a million miles away from my thinking - I was supposing that they just happened to grab dog walkers going past the office. I just wish they were a bit more descriptive on the dogs by detailing the breed - but of course they may not have actually known themselves..

Thanks Dean.

I knew about The High Street in Battle, but have added the other two onto my list.

It's the third card I know about numbered 64, quite an interesting puzzle really. Probably stems from Shoesmith taking over the stock of two or three other Hastings publishers that he was working for, including The Sussex Postcard Company. I currently know of 27 numbered 1, 20 numbered 2, and 18 number 3's!!!

Regards

Ron

Hi Ron,

Just to add to that info about card no 64... The Ecclesbourne Cliff one I have has a major publishing fault, it measures about 5.5 by 2.9 - so it could well be a 'reject'. As its a 'crinkled edge' card its definitely a publishing blip rather than an end user cropping the card.

There are also a few 'fakes' around but they are usually easy to spot because the back is all wrong - I did have one about a year ago but it sold. There was someone in the Eastbourne area who was producing fake postcards of both Frith's and Shoesmith & Etheridge (and generally making a mess of it!).

All of these 3 measure approx 5.70 by 4.10 - would have probably been published in the 60's early 70's when other publishers (most notably Frith's) started a range of larger type RP cards. I didn't know that Shoesmith & Etheridge had copied the trend until these popped up.

Winchelsea 9 scene multiview - RP - C11205
Winchelsea Strand Gate - RP - C6309

Also in the normal range.......

Dean

This slightly larger size was given the letter C in front of the number; although I have some with a C at normal size....As you have probably also guessed, the D code stands for Deckle edged, and again, not all D's have deckle edges!!!!!! I have a few Panoramic Cards with letter P in front, and some without. Seems to be no particular right or wrong way of numbering.

They must have had fun in that office in Earl Street and then Queens Road!

Thanks for the new information.

Ron
