Fairs or online

How do you get your new postcards - do you go to Specialised Fairs or purchase on-line, I wonder?

Maybe you do both... love to hear views/comments

Although I am not really a postcard collector (I collect stamps), I tend to get most of my postcards from my local stamp auction in Southampton. My first purchase was of a box of Edwardian postcards (about 800 topographical) for £20. Im not ashamed to say that I sell the postcards onwards to fund my stamp collection. Having said that I do take time to read any used cards and find some correspondence very interesting. I have a friend in London who collects Dennis/Dainty postcards so he gets first pick of any of these I have. I have found that some of the postcards I have put on ebay have gone to the places themselves. (Somebody at the British Museum purchased 2 different British Museum Cards from me).

I do peruse the wants list on this forum (and find them very interesting), in the hope that I may have something useful for any of the collectors.

regards, Wayne

I used to go to six or seven postcard fairs a year, sometimes travelling quite a distance. Then I found the number of purchases I was making was diminishing, I was buying a few cards that I wasn't too bothered about just to justify my trip and I was mistakenly buying the occasionally card that I already had. (My collection has well over 1,200 cards and I can't remember them all, even with the help of a list I would rake along).

I haven't been to a fair for five years or so, not even the big one three miles from me. I rely on adding to my collection on-line, sometimes paying well over the "fair" price because of the competition, occasionally getting a bargain. Nowadays I don't want to buy cards just because they show my theme, only if they're something special.

A pal of mine came to the Bury Postcard fair last weekend, his first postcard fair for many many years, and found just one more for his collection... and he did enjoy the buzz that the fair had + the face-to-face banter/chat; he also found it very tiring!

I believe that Postcard Fairs remain popular, despite many 'seasoned' collectors preferring on-line sites which offer 'armchair' viewing/buying.

Nothing like seeing in the flesh, so to speak!

On the flip-side of that: in a recent survey of members at the Bury Postcard Club, it showed that the majority (if any) of finds were via the internet these days... comfort of home/low overhead beats what is sometimes a long drive/time/petrol/costs to find very little...

I think you shouldn't rule out any way of buying (unless you have not got a computer!) certainly support fairs and don't rule out junk shops etc, I found some interesting cards the other day! But I look on line most evenings, dunno what for, I can't afford all I might want, but you never know what you will find, I'm a collector, so must acquire...something!

Just to update what I said in my previous post about acquiring postcards from my local stamp auction. I have also found that a bit of searching for local "general household auctions" can be a good source of material. I have a local(ish) one in Christchurch which has weekly sales and there is generally a postcard lot available. Also a bit of thinking outside the box also proves fruitful. As stated, I collect stamps but not first day covers, I am also a bus enthusiast and have a stall at local bus rallies where I sell my Covers and postcards. I tend to find that people of a certain generation have/had more than one hobby and I found a lot of bus enthusiasts also collect stamps etc so I do well for sales as I am selling stuff other stalls do not have. Try the antique fairs website as they list all types of fairs throughout the country and what is generally available. Its normally the little fairs that have the better stuff.
