Boer War photographic postcards

Post by Moonraker »

Are there many photographic postcards featuring the Boer War of 1899-1902? Not that I want to buy any, but I just need a couple of sentences for an article I'm writing about early postcards. I've just looked at eBay, and there's only one on offer.

(A while ago, a dealer was offering a card he thought he showed Boer prisoners at Tidworth in Wiltshire c1905. In fact they weren't Boers, but British soldiers who'd been "captured" in an exercise on Salisbury Plain.)

Yes, there are quite a few photographic postcards from the Boer War era, though they’re not as common as later wartime cards. Many depict British troops, camps, and occasional scenes of Boer prisoners or battle sites—though misidentifications, like the Tidworth example you mentioned, aren’t unusual!
