Postcards not sold on Ebay

Post by KateWilliamson »

Hello there.
I am posting on here to ask for some advice.
My late partner collected postcards of all sorts (among other things) and most were sold at auction a while ago. But I have found some more boxes and folders. These are mostly what I think were called 'Black Americana' and were believed to be humorous in the era in which they were made. Although they may be of historical and cultural interest I quite understand that they may be considered offensive. I cannot sell them on Ebay. Does your community have any advice about where they can be sold? Do collectors still buy them?
Thankyou in advance for your help with this.

I'd be interested in seeing these postcards.

I work as an ebay seller, lots of things aren't allowed on ebay, including childrens books by Dr Seuss.

Best to sell them to Post Card trader direct ... either visit a fair near you if there is one: https://postcard.co.uk/fairs.php or by contacting a trader from this list here: https://postcard.co.uk/dealers.php - they will be happy to help.

Ebay is not the only onlne sales site by the way ... eBid and Delcampe are suitable alternatives :-)

As for the collection you found, vintage postcards that fall under the category of "Black Americana" can indeed be of significant historical and cultural interest, but as you mentioned, they may also contain offensive imagery or messages, reflecting outdated and harmful stereotypes from their era.

It is true that Ebay has requirements for items sold and may block yours. I usually post on eBid and find it quite good. Or you can follow the information shared in the collector community. They often have exchanges to resell interesting items and the buying and selling will be done quite quickly.

Hi Kate, build now gg just wondering - it's been a couple of years since your original post. Were you able to find a place to sell or rehome the postcards you mentioned?

Given the sensitive nature of 'Black Americana' postcards and their historical context, snow roadwhat are the best ethical approaches to selling or donating these items, and are there specific collectors or organizations that focus on preserving such artifacts while ensuring they are handled with cultural sensitivity?
